Complementary approaches are practices focused on the body, relaxation, and well-being, offered alongside psychiatric or psychological care. They do not replace medical treatment or psychotherapy. At Almaval, they are part of a holistic approach to care, in coordination with your therapist and your healthcare network.

What are complementary approaches?

Mental health is not only addressed in consultations. The body, sleep, relaxation, and one's relationship with oneself also matter for well-being. Complementary approaches offer practices that address these dimensions, alongside care in psychiatry and in psychology and psychotherapy.

People sometimes speak of “holistic” care: the idea is to consider the person as a whole, body and mind, rather than solely the symptom. At Almaval, these approaches are designed to complement treatments, never to replace them.

What we offer

The complementary approaches available depend on the practitioners present in our centres, and the list evolves over time. These may include, for example, relaxation practices, body-centred approaches, or meditative practices.

The up-to-date list, including locations, days of presence, and a presentation of each practitioner, can be found in our directory.

Our common principles:

  • an interdisciplinary approach, in coordination with your therapist and the healthcare network already supporting you;
  • support tailored to each request;
  • practices offered as a complement, without interrupting or replacing an ongoing treatment.

Who is it for?

These approaches may be of interest to individuals already in treatment at Almaval or elsewhere who wish to complement their care with work on relaxation, the body, or well-being. The age groups accepted vary according to the practitioner: they are listed on each profile.

If you are experiencing significant psychological distress, the first step remains a consultation in psychiatry or in psychotherapy. Speak with your doctor or psychotherapist before starting a complementary approach, especially if you are undergoing treatment.

How does it work?

  1. Your request

    You request an appointment, specifying the approach that interests you, or you ask our secretariat for advice.

  2. The first session

    The practitioner discusses your expectations with you and explains how the practice works.

  3. Liaison with your ongoing care

    If you are receiving care from a therapist at Almaval and with your agreement, the professionals can coordinate so that everything remains coherent.

It is a way of considering the person as a whole, mind and body, and not merely a symptom. At Almaval, complementary approaches are integrated alongside psychiatric and psychological care, in close coordination with them.

Do complementary approaches replace psychotherapy or medical treatment?

No. They are practiced as a complement. Never discontinue a treatment without speaking to your doctor.

Which complementary approaches are offered?

The list depends on the practitioners present and evolves over time. It is up to date in our directory, along with a description of each practice.

Are complementary approaches covered by insurance?

They are not covered by basic health insurance (LAMal). They may be covered by certain complementary insurance plans: check with yours.

Do you need to be followed at Almaval to access them?

It is not essential. If you are receiving care elsewhere, speak to your doctor or your therapist before starting.
