The neuropsychological assessment evaluates, through tests, functions such as attention, memory, language, or impulse control, to identify your strengths and difficulties and guide your care. At Almaval, neuropsychologists see adolescents from the age of 16, adults, and older adults, particularly for ADHD and ASD assessments. The assessment is carried out under medical prescription, in Geneva, Morges, and Lausanne, in French or English.

What is a neuropsychological assessment?

The neuropsychological assessment is a non-invasive examination. It assesses functions such as language, memory, attention and concentration, impulse control, or the understanding of others’ mental states, using paper-and-pencil or computerized tests.

Its purpose is to understand your cognitive functioning, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and propose care tailored to your difficulties that takes your resources into account. The assessment is part of the healthcare network already supporting you: it complements, for example, the evaluation by a psychiatrist.

What assessments do we carry out?

  • Investigation of attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD) ;
  • Investigation of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with ADOS (see autism assessment in adults) ;
  • Memory assessment, in case of suspected neurodegenerative disorder;
  • Progress assessment after a brain injury: traumatic brain injury, stroke, tumour;
  • Assessment of cognitive disorders: memory, attention disorders, etc.

Assessments are intended for adolescents aged 16 and older, adults, and elderly persons. They are conducted in French or English.

How does an assessment take place?

  1. The anamnesis

    The first appointment allows you to discuss the reasons for the assessment, your background (development, schooling, professional life, medical history), and the difficulties you encounter in daily life.

  2. The tests

    Subsequent appointments are dedicated to testing. In total, the assessment generally takes place across 3 to 4 2-hour appointments.

  3. Results

    A final appointment is dedicated to discussing the results and care options.

  4. Is any preparation necessary?

    No specific preparation is necessary. You may bring previous evaluation reports (IQ, neuropsychological assessment, speech therapy assessment, brain imaging) and, for an ADHD or ASD investigation, your school report cards.

Patients and loved ones: request an assessment

A neuropsychological assessment requires a medical prescription. Before requesting it, you need two documents:

  • a prescription for the assessment, completed and signed by your doctor, depending on the canton where the assessment will be carried out (fillable on-screen templates for Vaud and for Geneva, PDF);
  • the document "Neuropsychological assessment request" (PDF), completed by the person requesting the assessment, preferably your psychiatrist, your psychotherapist, or your treating physician.

No assessment can be arranged without these documents. Once completed, they are sent via the assessment request form. If you do not yet have a physician to fill them out for you, the secretariat can guide you, for example towards a consultation psychiatric. You can also read Finding the right help.
