The psychiatrist is a medical doctor specialising in mental health: they assess your situation, make a diagnosis, offer psychotherapy, and prescribe medication if necessary. At Almaval, psychiatrists work in conjunction with existing care networks; age groups accepted, locations, and current availability are shown below and continuously updated. Consultations take place in our centres across French-speaking Switzerland (Crissier, Morges, Lausanne, Vevey, Geneva) and, depending on the psychiatrist, via video call.

When to consult a psychiatrist?

A psychiatric consultation may be helpful when psychological difficulties persist, worsen, or affect your personal, family, or professional life. For example:

  • anxiety, panic attacks, or intrusive thoughts (OCD);
  • a depressive mood, exhaustion, significant mood swings;
  • difficulties with attention, concentration, or impulsivity that suggest ADHD, in adolescents or adults;
  • questions about autism spectrum disorder or neurodivergence;
  • use of alcohol or substances, or a behaviour that has become difficult to control;
  • sleep disorders, relationship difficulties or a difficult life event to navigate;
  • the need for an opinion on current medication.

You do not need a diagnosis to make an appointment. If you are hesitating between a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or another professional, the page Finding the right help helps guide you.

Our fields in psychiatry

In addition to general psychiatric assessment and follow-up, Almaval's psychiatrists work in the following fields:

  • Psychopharmacology : selection, adjustment, and monitoring of medication;
  • Addictology : support for substance and non-substance addictions;
  • Ethnopsychiatry : taking into account culture, language, and migration background in care;
  • Forensic psychiatry : psychiatric matters related to the justice system;
  • Vocational rehabilitation : support in staying at or returning to work;
  • Interventional psychiatry, including the ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), in our Vaud centres.

Interventional psychiatry treatments are only considered after a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, on medical indication, and when other treatments have proved insufficient. The psychiatrist discusses them with you, along with their expected effects and limitations.

How does a psychiatric consultation take place?

  1. Assessment

    The initial interview allows us to understand what brings you here, your history, your health, and your expectations. Depending on the situation, the assessment continues over one or more appointments and may be supported by questionnaires or a neuropsychological assessment.

  2. The care plan

    The psychiatrist will then suggest a care plan: psychotherapy, medication, referral to a psychologist-psychotherapist, nursing care or another resource. Decisions are made with you.

  3. The follow-up

    The pace of the consultations is adapted to your situation and reviewed over time.

  4. The link with your network

    With your agreement, the psychiatrist works in liaison with your attending physician and the other professionals already caring for you.

Psychiatrist or psychologist: whom to consult?

Both can provide psychotherapy. The psychiatrist is a medical doctor: they can additionally make a medical diagnosis, prescribe medication, issue a medical certificate or a psychotherapy prescription. The psychologist-psychotherapist is a specialist in psychotherapy, with many possible approaches: see Psychology and psychotherapy. For an assessment of cognitive functions (attention, memory), see Neuropsychology.
